Everyone’s issues are complex and unique, but the result of using food to cope is the common denominator for emotional eaters,” says Beth Castle, author of Stop Emotional Eating, Fix Food Cravings, Find Your Metabolism and More.&lt;br /&gt;Castle, a dietary technician and public speaker, literally wrote the book on conquering emotional eating.&lt;br /&gt;The pages serve as an interactive manual for anyone who wants to understand the reasons behind why they might eat emotionally, and how they can begin to stop.&lt;br /&gt;It was exactly the kind of read that Denise Szekrenyes was looking for.&lt;br /&gt;Szekrenyes, 46, says she has been dealing with “food issues” since she was a young adult.&lt;br /&gt;“I struggled with anorexia as a teen, but I had never really admitted it to myself until I went to see Beth speak,” says Szekrenyes, who attended one of Castle’s speaking engagements just over a year ago.&lt;br /&gt;Throughout most of her adult life, Szekrenyes says, she let food control issues consume her. While she was underweight in her early 20s, by her 30s she had put on extra pounds.&lt;br /&gt;Szekrenyes found herself in an emotionally abusive relationship, and she began to seek solace in food.&lt;br /&gt;Now happily remarried, Szekrenyes says she has a new outlook on life. She lost some of the extra pounds but says she still needed some help addressing the emotional issues behind her food cravings and control issues.&lt;br /&gt;Castle’s no nonsense yet empathetic advice and theories on emotional eating struck the right note.&lt;br /&gt;“She understands the dysfunction. It’s not about a diet, it’s about addressing the mental issues that are behind the addiction. Her ideas are centred around dealing with those issues and replacing the bad mental inner talk with more positive thoughts,” Szekrenyes says.&lt;br /&gt;Castle’s book, which also comes as an e-book and an audio guidebook, gives readers a step-by-step process to identify the reasons why they overeat.&lt;br /&gt;Readers can make notes, journal and work through those issues as they read. It’s not a diet, but Castle does give readers the basics regarding healthy eating and making nutritious choices.&lt;br /&gt;She says the trick to conquering emotional eating issues lies in identifying what you’re feeling when you have a craving, and where that emotion comes from.&lt;br /&gt;“This is not a quick fix, and people sometimes want a quick fix,” Castle says.&lt;br /&gt;“Eventually, people realize that diets alone can leave them on a roller-coaster ride. You’re either on a diet or off a diet. Once people get to the point where they realize a quick fix doesn’t work, they begin looking for long term answers and that’s where dealing with the emotional issues behind why they overeat becomes important.”&lt;br /&gt;Castle worked as a food counsellor with Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers in Calgary for many years before writing her book. She saw first-hand the complexities behind most people’s weight issues and she says it was her clients that inspired her to write her book.&lt;br /&gt;Castle says there are no fast rules as to how Stop Emotional Eating should be read or followed — the book can be used alone or in conjunction with another weight-loss plan or diet.&lt;br /&gt;“I jump around in the book and through the exercises quite a bit,” says Szekrenyes.&lt;br /&gt;“It’s a continual process. I’ll read a chapter and think about it for a while, sometimes for weeks or months. Then I’ll go back to it later when I’m ready.”&lt;br /&gt;Castle’s process focuses on replacing emotional eating with positive activities and rewards.&lt;br /&gt;“If food is a reward, or something you’re using to comfort yourself, then it can be helpful to find a different activity or thing to do instead of eat when you first feel that craving. For me, it’s to have a cuddle with my dogs,” Castle explains.&lt;br /&gt;“It sounds simple, but it stops you from taking that first bite and forces you to do something else instead, something positive. You don’t have to run a marathon — even taking a quick walk around the block can help to get your mind off the food and get you doing something positive.”&lt;br /&gt;Castle says she encourages people to take things one day at a time.&lt;br /&gt;“People get stuck when they overdo it, or when they punish themselves for slipping up. That’s something I address in the book as well. I have chocolate, sometimes I feel guilty. That’s life,” she says.&lt;br /&gt;“If you beat yourself up for having a couple cookies for your snack, then you’re going to fall back into the trend of punishing yourself and indulging in negative self talk. Ie)&lt;br /&gt;o you feel frustration – is food escape?&lt;br /&gt;o You feel stress – food is escape, or comfort, or security or love, or freedom?? What is the role that it plays??&lt;br /&gt;o You feel sadness – food is happy or is it to dull the pain, or escape or what?&lt;br /&gt;o You feel like you don’t fit in – lonely – is food to comfort for security or love?&lt;br /&gt;o Unresolved stress? Food is comfort or an answer for the moment? You decide? Listen to what you need!&lt;br /&gt;Really hear the role that the food plays for you.&lt;br /&gt;Then you must come up with a non food, non harmful replacement for that Role.&lt;br /&gt;? Hugs, cuddles, hot tea and a magazine, people to verbal tell you they love you, people tell you did a good job?&lt;br /&gt;? an invite to a gathering? Money coming in for mortgage vs. security challenge?&lt;br /&gt;? a lab test to be positive?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Self talk in a negative situation or negative emotion typically is not truthful – like for instance “I am such an idiot” or “I am such a failure” or “ I am not going to get this ever”&lt;br /&gt;The self talk here if you really hear it – it is not true! Really – think – it is really not true at all. You are not an idiot or a failure and you will get it with the right tools and techniques.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Think about your self talk that is negative....it is not true.&lt;br /&gt;So stop it. You all deserve!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To really help with emotional eating – use a list of activities that you can do to distract you from your emotional eating lapses...you know where and when you typically eat for emotional reasons...&lt;br /&gt;Is it as work? Is it a home alone? Is it in your car? Is it with another person who self saboteurs too?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Come up with an activity that suits your mood to distract you from eating for emotional reasons. If you need it to be comforting – guess what the distracting activity must be? Comforting...&lt;br /&gt;If you need to keep busy to occupy your mind...that is the type of activity you will do instead of eat.&lt;br /&gt;Remember to plan your snacks and meals too! This helps so much!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also I have added this to my monthly group...&lt;br /&gt;Having a snack bag with all of your healthy choices all at your finger tips ready for you even if you are at home helps too.&lt;br /&gt;(yes even at home – that way you are not “in” the cupboards trying to find a snack and suddenly that item that you forgot about is suddenly looking delicious – when it wasn’t even on your mind until you opened the cupboard&lt;br /&gt;Door) less chance of adding calories to your day – if you stick to what is in your bag.&lt;br /&gt;Choose items that you will find delicious – like fresh strawberries, or fresh pineapple – you know what you like.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or in Airdrie Alberta we have a great snack that hits the carbs, protein and smidge of fat that we need for our snacks or meals to keep us going – “Organic Freedom Bars” – they are so yummy and healthy.&lt;br /&gt;Made with nuts, seeds, dried fruit, quinoa, coconut, and carob chips – just the right amount of sweet to hit that sweet tooth!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Be prepared with food,&lt;br /&gt;Be prepared with positive self talk&lt;br /&gt;Be prepared with a plan of food for tomorrow&lt;br /&gt;Be prepared with an activity to take your brain and your mood away from emotional eating and give you a break to change up your focus!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take great care of yourself and put yourself first – like the oxygen mask on the airplane! As North American’s we have tripled the statistics to 67% of the population are overweight or obese since 2006.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Comments from a recent talk &lt;em&gt;–“It was a very interesting, very informative, fun and inspiring evening for me. I learned a great deal. I really appreciate your approach – you are kind in sharing your information, knowledge, experiences and I appreciate and admire that you truly “care” about people – it really shows in your presentation and words.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;span style="color:#3333ff;"&gt;Combating Food Cravings&lt;/span&gt; &lt;em&gt;- as published in Calgary Neighbours Newspaper Feb 24/11&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;Having a craving and being hungry are very different. A craving is that nagging feeling of wanting a certain food item or a particular taste in your mouth. Sometimes our imagination will work overtime to focus on that food and then we can end up desiring that food all day!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cravings for food can emerge at anytime. Cravings are not always negative—they can signal our bodies’ deficiencies in certain minerals, vitamins, or enzymes; they may be related to our nutritional needs, or they may alert us to certain hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, or even insulin resistance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All food cravings, however, can become a negative in our overall health when we respond inappropriately to them. The result is that we damage our metabolism, increase weight gain, and endanger our health. You should consult a qualified nutritionist and/or your doctor if you have concerns about cravings and the effect they have on your metabolism.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some strategies for coping with and eliminating common cravings. There are two important ideas about cravings. First, they have nothing to do with will power. Secondly, we need to pay attention to what foods we crave and how we respond to them. Here are some strategies to help you recognize and deal with food cravings:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Foods that have a strong flavor may cause you to crave another food. For example, tomato sauce, cream sauce, or spicy foods containing garlic may cause you to crave a sweet food. This is because your palate and tongue are full of taste receptors; the strong flavored food may have a lingering taste and you need to cleanse your palate to get over it. Eating grapes, apples, watermelon, pineapple and cucumber can help to do this. Other non-food alternatives are to try a tongue scraper to get rid of the taste, or brush your teeth or chew some gum. You will be quite surprised by the results. Beth can help when it comes to that potato chip craving as well!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Beth’s goal is to lessen the pain associated with food. If you feel supported, explain that to the people in your group.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Ask if you could meet them at the restaurant after they eat. Or say that you are tied up until then, and you will come for a coffee after instead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• If you end up going to the buffet restaurant, ask for a menu instead of choosing the buffet option. Feel confident making this good choice and avoiding the buffet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Ask to be seated far away from the buffet. If the buffet is in someone’s home, sit far away from the buffet table.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• If you choose to partake of the buffet, survey the spread for wise choices and also for ideas that will promote your success. Stick to your plan. Tell yourself that the foods on a buffet table always look much better than they taste. Actually this is probably true because the foods are prepared in large quantities and kept warm or cold for hours rather than being prepared fresh for individual plates.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Choose a smaller plate if you can. If a smaller plate is not available, then stay within the inner ring of the dinner plate and don’t place any food beyond that edge.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Have a small soup to start, or a large salad.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Have just a dab of what you would like to try. When you place the food samples on your plate, arrange it so that foods don’t touch each other.&lt;br /&gt;• Take your time. Sit down and enjoy your food. Taste every bite; enjoy the company.&lt;br /&gt;• Have fruit for dessert. Share a sugary dessert if you must, but have just one or two bites. Enjoy them. Savor the flavors. Allow yourself to have the taste without overindulging.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• When you are done eating, place your knife and fork on the plate and cover your plate with your paper napkin. Shift the plate away from you a couple of inches. This signals that you are finished eating and a server can remove your plate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Resist the temptation to go back to the table for “seconds.” Be honest with yourself about your eating plan and be in control. part 1</title><content type='html'>&lt;strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Social events&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Here are some more strategies that can help you focus on the event and not the food:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;• Plan your day when you know you will be going out later. Balance your meals and snacks earlier in the day.&lt;br /&gt;• Otherwise you will be so hungry that you will over-do it when you get to the event.&lt;br /&gt;• Compensate for an occasion that you know will be centered on food: plan extra exercise and balance out your daily food intake.&lt;br /&gt;• Ask what will be served so you know how to plan ahead of time.&lt;br /&gt;• Plan to eat in moderation and adjust your portions accordingly. Choose foods that are healthy.&lt;br /&gt;• If you must have a sweet dessert, select one that is your least favorite so you do not eat as much of it.&lt;br /&gt;• Ask your host or hostess if you may bring a dish to the event—make it something that you can fit into your eating plan.&lt;br /&gt;• Do you have a support person with you? Tell that support person ahead of time about any food or eating challenges you expect to encounter. Talk about the support you need.&lt;br /&gt;• Show up to the event later to avoid the appetizers. Eat before you go.&lt;br /&gt;• Pre-portion your plate with foods that fit your plan and only eat what is on your plate to avoid picking.&lt;br /&gt;• Focus on the non-food topics and on the other guests.&lt;br /&gt;• Keep a healthy drink in your hand at all times; Keep updating your book whenever successful thoughts come into your head. If you don't have your book handy, just write it down on a scrap piece of paper and transfer it into your book later. This book is all about your OWN tips on how you can stay successful; a year from now, 3 years from now, 10 years from now...etc. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The idea is, for instance, if you said, "Having that afternoon snack to curb my appetite until dinner is a lifesaver for me to ensure that I do not overeat at supper!"  That right there is a golden nugget of information for you to keep so that when you go off track a bit, which you will, that golden nugget will be in your book, at your fingertips. Almost like an operator's manual for you, about you, about getting right back on track!
